While he was studying classical music, he began to play jazz drums under the influence of Elvin Jones and Joe Morello, and soon joined Yosuke Yamashita's group in 1967. After graduating from the university, he toured in Japan as a member of the legendary bassless free-jazz band, Yosuke Yamashita Trio. During this period, he created his own "free-style" drumming which was so unique that nobody could ever play like him. From 1974 to 1975, he made three European tours with Yamashita Trio and the audiences were astonished by his overwhelming power and virtuosity. By his performances in Europe, he began to be known to the jazz scene all over the world. He went out of Yamashita Trio in December 1975 to pursue his own music. He formed a band in 1977 with his fellow musicians such as Fumio Itabashi (p) and Hideaki Mochizuki (b). He made six records as a leader and toured across Japan and Europe, but in 1984 he stopped playing and moved to Nagoya. After five years of retirement, he came back to the scene in 1989 and started recording and touring. He made an European tour to Germany and Italy in 1994. In 2002, his long time achievement was rewarded by three major awards; the 27th Fumio Nanri Award, the 35th Jazz Disc Award (Japanese Players category), and the 56th National Arts Festival Excellence Award (records devision). He had recorded with many great musicians such as Yosuke Yamashita, Akira Sakata, Manfred Schoof, Adelhard Roidinger, Aki Takase, and Mal Waldron. Today his recordings as a leader or a sideman are available from Enja, MPS, Tokuma Japan, DIW, and MFC. His latest two albums, "MORI" and "YAMA," were recorded in 2002 with his regular band and the saxophone master, George Garzone. ≪経歴≫
